A new book by Elaine Mirabella Garretson, HSHS Class of 1971

Elaine Mirabella Garretson , HSHS Class of 1971, has written "Deadbeat Daddy ".

DEADBEAT DADDY is a stunning indictment of America’s Child Support Enforcement System. Author Elaine D. Garretson negotiated the child support enforcement system for 32 years until she met with success in procuring overdue support from her daughter's birth father.  Her litigation efforts resulted in a precedent setting court victory.

The story focuses on Michelle, one of millions of children affected by this negligent and understaffed bureaucracy. The System fails to enforce the court order that requires Michelle’s father to support her.

The reader travels into their uncertain world as Michelle and her mother Elaine struggle to survive. It is a critical situation that cannot be understood simply by reading the overwhelming statistics on non-support.  Deadbeat Daddy puts a name and a face on one child out of millions.  Her story graphically illustrates how the lack of child support impacts Michelle’s life. Elaine’s candor and humility help us to envision the pain and uncertainty Michelle experiences due to her father’s abandonment. Elaine also documents her own struggle to overcome the shame and fear that are the emotional shackles of domestic violence.

Deadbeat Daddy is a sad and frightening story.  It is also humorous and compassionate.  It is ultimately victorious and inspiring.

Deadbeat Daddy by Elaine Garretson is available online from all major booksellers (Borders, Barnes & Noble, Booksamillion, Amazon.com, etc.) Elaine is available for interviews and speaking engagements.

Elaine Garretson

Elaine (Mirabella) Garretson, Highland Springs High School class of ’71, is a second generation Springer.  Her mother, Doris O’Rork Mirabella graduated from Highland Springs in 1941.  Several other relatives, including cousin Maureen (Cash) Moffet (class of ’72), cousin Dale Thaw (class of ’72), and brother Glenn Mirabella (class of ’73) also attended HSHS.

Elaine is a graduate of Winona State University. Following her graduation from college, she and her daughter Michelle lived in Europe and in several locations throughout the United States before moving to the southwest. While living in Arizona Elaine became a U.S. Customs Officer. In 1994, Elaine relocated to the Northern Virginia area where she oversaw the International Extradition Unit of the U.S. Marshals Service. In 2004, Elaine retired from government service to pursue her writing career full time.

Elaine negotiated the child support enforcement system for 32 years until she met with success in procuring overdue support from her daughter's birth father. Her litigation efforts resulted in a precedent setting court victory. Her prayer is that DEADBEAT DADDY will help establish a national dialogue and bring awareness to the tragedy of millions of children who have been financially abandoned.
