Click to Open "Highland Springs Favorite Recipes"THE BOOK , "Favorite Highland Springs Recipes" was written and published in 1953 by the Highland Springs Senior Women's Club as a fund raiser.

WE WERE NOT SURE where to place this feature because it is a piece of our past and has a food element as well. We decided that this section provides ONE CREDIT EACH in History and Home Economics. No skipping this class.

The book has recipes from some of the leading citizens of Highland Springs and has a foreword about the history of the town. The publication was produced in typewriter text (recreated here) and has hand-drawn illustrations and advertisements for the local merchants that helped pay for its printing.

We have tried to faithfully recreate the imagery and feel of the book as it was printed 50 years ago. The recipes, page numbers and illustrations are presented just as they were in the original book.

We have recreated about 30 pages so far, including those great hot breads of Highland Springs, Chop Suey by Coach Gilly Sorrell, and Soups by Mrs. Ralph Johenning and Mrs. A. H. Hechler. More pages will be coming soon. Check back often for a look at the Food of the Fifties in Highland Springs.

A Big Thank You....

The Springer Connection thanks Vicky Wright Covington, HSHS Class of '74, for providing the Recipe book for this feature.

Vicky found the cookbook and laboriously scanned in images for us to work with, including the cover art and pages.

So, all you folks out there in SpringerLand with cool items like these -- follow Vicky's example, come to the front of the class, take the chewing gum out of your mouth, and share!
