Daze: The Story of WGOE
A tie-dyed retrospective
of the radio business in the seventies
A new book by Michael Murray
Radio Daze - an entertaining new book
by E. Michael Murray. In this tie-dyed
retrospective of the radio business
in the seventies, Michael Murray and
the gang at WGOE revolutionized the
radio business in Richmond, VA.
Radio Daze tells
the story of an Adman gone amuck, proclaiming “Eat,
Drink And Be Murray” to the high school and
college students of the early seventies over WGOE Radio
in Richmond, Virginia.
Come along with the Adman as he flies by the seat of
his pants, turning WGOE into one of the most remembered
stations to ever hit the airwaves. One adventure after
another keeps the reader wondering what is going
to happen next.
During the era of bra burning, ban
the bomb, and Woodstock, Radio
Daze is a rock and roll
masterpiece. If you were there for WGOE, you’ll
love Radio Daze. And if you weren’t, you’ll
wish you were!

"There’s cats all over Nashville peddlin'
songs...and most of them are good. Harland Hall, John
B. Loudermilk, Hoyt Atkins, Boots Randolph, Floyd Kramer,
Bob Willis. Shet, Glenn, you’ve got a God-given
talent for music and picking a tune... that’s
why you’re so dad-blamed ugly... but to make
it big in music of any kind you need a break and lots
of good luck. Look at Rusty and Doug... smartest thing
they ever done was to sign up with Hawkshaw. The old
Hawk’ll
take 'em for every cent they make. They’ll be
poorer but wiser. He’s got them on the road starting
next week. So far Hawk’s got $35,000 tied up
in ‘Mister
Love’ and it’s only being played in Wheeling.
He should have made the record down at the Bus Station
in one of those little phone booths that the sailors
are always sending songs home to their girlfriends."
“There’s a station in Pittsburgh, WJAS,
that plays rock twenty-four a day. Jackie Wilson and
Brenda Lee sold out the Mosque for personal appearances
last month. I was there.”
Mousie turned up his
nose and left the room, returning with a stack of 78’s
under his arm. “Turn
on His Master's Voice and I’ll play you some
tunes you should only be so lucky as to hear on the
radio. First though, I got something to put you in
the right mood to listen.“
He unbuttoned the
flap on his cowboy shirt and pulled out what looked
like a pack of cards. “A
little catnip courtesy of a couple Nashville Cats...”
He passed a rolled-up reefer to Glen and Murray. Murray
politely refused. No way was he going to get hooked
on drugs. Mousie and Glen lit up and left him alone.
For the next hour, he sat there drinking Dukes and
listening to some fantastic music...Hank Williams,
Patsy Cline, Tex Ritter, Hawkshaw Hawkins, and Mousie’s
new songs. Murray didn’t keep
track but he must have drank at least a half a case
of Duke, and to put it mildly, Sunday afternoon and
he was gassed. Suddenly, a loud knock on the door.
Mousie grabbed his catnip and ran to the kitchen. Glen
picked up the reefer butts and chucked them out an
open window. Headlines in The News Register flashed
through Murray’s mind...”Drug Ring Smashed.
Country Music Vagabond and Local Youths arrested smoking
marijuana and listening to rock and roll music"...
